Carabiners
Carabiners are used everyday by arborist. Carabiners tend to have a wider gate opening than snaps and are less bulky. Any carabiner used for life support must be double locking and have at least two consecutive, deliberate actions to prepare the gate for opening. They must have a minimum tensile strength of 5,000 pounds (22.4kN).
Carabiners used for rigging do not have to be double locking but for some applications, double locking would be a safer option. A good rule of thumb is to use aluminum carabiners for life support and steel carabiners for rigging.
Non locking carabiners are used as accessory clips for attaching ropes, rigging gear or saws to the harness. Some are made of plastic and others are made of aluminum.
