Game changer for DDRT climbing

Game changer for DDRT climbing. Saves much energy for the work as it makes the climb easier and faster. Seems durable. Small strap, which tightens the device to your foot needs some dressing up in order not to come too loose while climbing. I've taken to wrapping the end of the strap around itself prior to making the final pull to tight. This confines the strap under itself helping to prevent it moving back through the buckle. The has several small, sharp, pointed spurs that hold on to the rope well. Hasn't slipped at all. My 16 strand rope appears unmarred by the spurs at this point (one month of multiple climbs per week). It's much handier to install the optional catch (cost around $8) which holds the cam system shut on the rope to prevent kick out. The catch can be easily set to open which holds the cam open for when you're ready to insert the rope. When the catch is closed the rope cannot be kicked out. Installation of the catch prevents the free floating of the cam--the catch either holds it open and thus, not able to grip the rope, or holds the cam shut on the rope preventing kick out. The catch unlocks easily with a finger.
The price of the Petzl Pantin foot ascender is nice too. One of the most affordable foot ascenders available, the lower price and excellent function combine to make this an excellent value. It's importance to my climb system cannot be overstated.

Learning Curve

Petzl always makes quality equipment, this is no different. I'm sure over time it will earn a 5 start but it is tricky to get used to. I watched the reviews and knew going into it it may take some time to master and that as proven to be true. This ascender doesn't have a lock, so if you don't hold your foot the right way and ride the rope properly on the up stroke the rope pops out. I have gotten more proficient every time I have used it and it certainly appears to be a error on my part. Once I master the technique I think it will be a great advantage to remove the rope with a twist of the foot and not have to reach down to release a lock.
