The Spectracide HG-69000 Pruning Sealer is a flexible asphalt-based aerosol sealant designed to protect trees and shrubs from disease and decay that can enter through freshly pruned cuts. The spray-on formula dries to a flexible, waterproof black coating that moves with the plant as it grows. Also effective for sealing and waterproofing clay pots, wooden planters, rain gutters, roof flashings, and small sections of asphalt driveways, and can be applied to the underside of a lawn mower deck to protect against debris damage. 13 oz aerosol can.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does current arborist best practice recommend pruning sealer?
The use of pruning sealers on tree wounds is a debated topic in arboriculture. Modern ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) guidance generally does not recommend routine sealing of pruning cuts on healthy trees, as research has shown that trees compartmentalise wounds naturally and that sealers can sometimes trap moisture or interfere with the tree’s own defence response. However, pruning sealer continues to be used by many professionals in specific situations — such as on oak trees during the growing season to reduce risk of oak wilt transmission, or on elms to reduce Dutch elm disease exposure. Consult current ISA or local extension service guidance for your specific tree species and region before applying.
Is this product safe to use on all tree species?
Spectracide Pruning Sealer is formulated for general use on trees and shrubs. As noted above, its use on certain species (particularly oaks and elms in disease-pressure areas) may be recommended as a preventive measure. Avoid application to edible crops or food-producing trees. Read the full label before use and observe all precautions regarding flammability (rated 4) and VOC content (39.7%).
How should I apply pruning sealer to a fresh cut?
Shake the can well and apply a thin, even coat directly to the pruning cut surface immediately after cutting. Hold the can approximately 8–12" from the surface and spray in a sweeping motion to achieve uniform coverage. Allow to dry before rain exposure. Do not over-apply — a single thin coat is sufficient. The product is also effective on angled or irregular cuts where brush-on products may be difficult to apply evenly.
Can this be used indoors or in enclosed spaces?
No — this is an aerosol product with a flammability rating of 4 and VOC content of 39.7%. Use outdoors or in well-ventilated areas only, away from open flames, sparks, and heat sources. Do not use near running engines or electrical equipment. Read all safety precautions on the label before use.
