Tree Gaffs (also known as hooks, spikes, or spurs) are one of the most common tools for tree removal operations. They attach to your legs and include climbing spikes or gaffs, or however you choose to call them, that allow you to better position yourself before making a cut. Tree gaffs come in different options ranging from gaff length to shape to material, but a good pair of tree climbing spikes is always suggested for any tree climbing professional.

The most important consideration in your climber set is comfort. You want to be able to wear these if the removal calls for all day in the canopy! Common materials vary
between steel and aluminum. Different names for gaffs include hooks, spurs and spikes.
